Rhineland Palatinate/Saarland
This area is made up of two regions: Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.
Rhineland-Palatinate is located in southwest Germany. The region borders on North Rhineland-Westphalia, Saarland, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Luxemburg, Belgium and France. The capital city of Rhineland-Palatinate is Mainz. This city, which radiates Old World charm, has some nice town squares and churches. The Imperial Cathedral (Kaiserdom) is a definite highpoint of any visit to the city. This 11th-century Roman cathedral is still in its original condition, which is rather unique. Discover the diversity of this region from your cottage!
Cottages on the Rhine and the Moselle
This region is of course also known for the Moselle and Rhine rivers. The area is ideal for nice boat trips from your cottage, and the bicycle routes are great too. There are romantic castles, nice spots for a picnic and lovely little towns, Cochem for example.
Your cottage in Rhineland-Pfalz on the Deutsche Weinstrasse
The Deutsche Weinstrasse (the German wine route) leads to a hilly area with many vineyards. You can visit Bad Dürkheim, amongst others. Every year in September the Wurstmarkt (the sausage market) is held here, which, despite its name, celebrates the wine harvest. You can taste wine in many places en route. The cities of Worms and Speyer are also nearby. Both of these cities go back to Roman times. The cottages in Rhineland-Pfalz are the ideal base from where to discover the region.
Holiday homes Saarland, a region steeped in history
The second region is Saarland, whose capital is Saarbrücken. It borders on France, Luxemburg and Rhineland-Pfalz. Saarbrücken is located on the Saar River and has a number of nice historical monuments such as a basilica and a palace. The area, including Völklingen, was previously one of great activity in the coal and steel industries. It is a nice city to visit, and its factories are listed on the Unesco World Heritage Sites list.
