Winding roads take you along hills covered with vines, rugged mountains, green valleys, quiet mountain villages, ancient monasteries, churches and traditional taverns. Stop in a village for a Greek meal and enjoy it outdoors under the plane trees! Samos is popular with hikers, especially during the spring. Countless marked trails can be found, from a climb along old donkey trails and through woods to routes along vineyards, olive groves and clear mountain streams. Samos has a rich history and culture. The entire island is covered with the exciting remains of antiquity. A few examples are the (ruins of the) Temple of Hera (Heraion, UNESCO) and the Pythagoreion, including the remains of Roman baths, the old city walls and the Efpalion tunnel. There are also numerous other sights to explore on the island, such as the Moni Vronda and Zoodochos Pigis, as well as countless caves, like the Cave of Pythagoras, where Pythagoras once hid out.
