The surrounding area is excellent for biking and hiking. Be sure also to visit the cities of Maastricht, Aachen and Liège. Each of these cities has its own unique character and all are easily reached from Walem. Gaia Zoo in Kerkrade, relaxation at Thermae2000 in Valkenburg, Hoensbroek Castle, De Valkenier amusement park, the Brand beer brewery (the oldest in the Netherlands) and the limestone mines in Valkenburg are other great daytrips.
