Rhodes

Santorini, the ideal destination for a versatile holiday in Greece

Discover the beautiful Cyclades island of Santorini in Greece, perhaps one of the most extraordinary Greek islands. This island was created in 1500 BC after a severe volcanic eruption, and as a result, has a varied and impressive landscape full of volcanic rocks. Between these rocks, small churches with bright blue domes and white houses form a unique contrast that has been captured on film by many a tourist. So if you have booked a holiday in Santorini, don't forget to bring your camera. Partly because of the many possibilities in terms of photography, holiday homes in Santorini are very popular with tourists from all over the world. But that's not the only thing this Greek island has to offer.

Visit the many churches on Santorini

Wherever on Santorini your holiday home is located, chances are that there is a church in the vicinity. Santorini has more than 250 churches scattered throughout the island. Because they were built at different times, there is a large variation in colour, shape and size. A number of churches are worth a visit because of their history or location. The Panagia Episkopi in Mesa Gonia certainly deserves your special attention. This church symbolizes the traditional architecture of the island, and is a true source of inspiration for its inhabitants. In addition, the orthodox and catholic cathedral in Fira should not be missing from your list of attractions. They offer a view of the beautiful caldera. Finally, in Imerovigli, the Agios Georgios offers you a breathtaking view of Santorini.

Relax on Santorini in one of the hot springs, or on the beach

If you are on holiday in Santorini for a longer period, the hot springs on the island of Neo Kameni are highly recommended. You can reach these hot springs by boat. They offer a day of peace and quiet in blissful water, or a real mud bath. Some sources are not accessible by boat, and in that case you will need to swim a little to enjoy them. Another way to relax in Santorini, is to visit one of the many beaches. Most of the beaches on this island are dark and stretched out in both width and length. If you like sunbathing, you should preferably choose a holiday home in Santorini located near Perissa or Kamari. The red beach of Kokkini is also a real attraction in the summer months. When travelling with children, the beaches are ideal for them to play to their heart's content.

Archaeology on Santorini

If you are fascinated by history, you will also fully enjoy a holiday home in Santorini. The Ancient Thira site is located on the island, on the Mesa Vouna. You can visit this archaeological site individually, or with a guide who can give you plenty of information about the origins of the site. The ruins here date from the Hellenistic period, and take you back to the time of the Proletarians. In addition to temples and sanctuaries, there are the remains of a theatre, a gymnasium, baths and a church. You can reach the site by car or moped, but those who are not scared of a long trip, can walk from their flat in Santorini to Ancient Thira. Another archaeological site in Santorini is Akrotiri. This attraction consists of the remains of a Minoan city, and is considered one of the most impressive and important sites of the Aegean Sea.

Santorini from a bungalow in Pyrgos

If you like narrow streets, a beautiful sunset, cosy crowds and rustic restaurants, then a holiday home in Pyrgos is the perfect choice for you. This touristic place used to be the capital of Santorini, and today is one of the most popular places on the island. The walk through Pyrgos to 'Kastelli' is very popular. This Venetian fortress is one of the five forts built on Santorini, and guarantees a spectacular sunset. The other four forts also attract a lot of people every night. In the centre of the city, you will find several small restaurants where you will be served both an international and a Greek menu. If you would like to dine in Santorini before you return to your holiday home, you can certainly do so here.

Traditional fishing villages in Santorini

There is no shortage of fishing villages on this Greek island. A holiday home in Vlychada will allow you to taste the ancient traditions of the fishing villages. In addition, the sand cliffs in Vlychada with their whimsical shapes, are a feast for the eyes. If you rent a villa here, you will enjoy a stay full of authenticity, gastronomy and beauty. From views, to culinary delights and enough rest to relax completely.
