Vosges

A holiday home in the Vosges is highly recommended at any time of year. This mountain range in the north-east of France is located on the border of Alsace and Lorraine. In the summer you can go hiking or mountain biking and enjoy the wonderful countryside with its beautiful lakes, mountain streams and waterfalls. In autumn, the eastern side of the mountain range is particularly beautiful, and the vines of Alsace turn from orange to deep red. From the end of October, the Vosges will be covered with snow and the area will be preparing for winter sports. A holiday home in the Vosges offers a perfect base for winter sports!

From your holiday home in the Vosges you can step right out into the heart of nature.

The Vosges Mountains are very varied. To the north are the Vosges Gréseuses, formed mainly of sandstone. To the south are the Vosges Cristallines, formed mainly of crystalline rock. On the western side is Lorraine, the slopes are less steep and the landscape is features waterfalls, lakes and forests. The eastern side has a much milder climate. This region is known as Alsace, sheltered from the westerly winds by the peaks of the Vosges. These slopes get low rainfall, so are ideal for wine-growing.

Two regional nature parks are found in this mountainous region. To the north lies the Vosges du Nord. A magnificent region, with beautiful lakes and vast forests where deer live. Lovely here for walking or cycling. Further south is the regional nature park, Ballons des Vosges. The high peaks here offer an impressive view. The Grand Ballon is the highest peak, at 1,424 metres. Getting to the top of one of these mountains is a great challenge for active people.

A highlight: the Route des Crètes

The Route des Crètes is one not to miss when visiting the Vosges. While travelling the beautiful road over the mountain peaks, you will come across great natural beauty. Deep forests and green valleys are interspersed with bare plains and beautiful lakes. The road was built during the First World War to supply the front line. Along the way you will come across a number of war memorials. A fascinating day out from your holiday home in the Vosges!

Winter sports in the Vosges

In winter, the Vosges Mountains are an excellent area for winter sports. There isn't always sufficient snow, but the area has hundreds of snow cannons, so the skiing is always good quality. The two main ski resorts in this region are La Bresse and Gérardmer. You can go alpine and cross-country skiing here, as well as morning and evening skiing.
