Enjoying your holiday on Formentera

The smallest island in the Balearics is also the most unspoilt, with the most beautiful beaches and the clearest seas. Formentera exudes a tranquillity that is unprecedented along the Spanish coast, but it is also a very welcoming island. All the beaches offer small beach bars or restaurants where you can escape the sun during the siesta period. Most of them are open until after sunset, a natural phenomenon that is at its most beautiful here. Formentera, together with the island of Ibiza, are called the "Pitiusas", a name that originates from the Greeks and means 'pine-covered islands'. Almost all beaches in Formentera allow naturists, a typical expression of the relaxed atmosphere that prevails there. This sister island to Ibiza was discovered in the seventies by hippies who thought it was too busy on Ibiza. Formentera will never appeal to the masses because every visitor has to arrive by sea as there is no airport. However, in the evening there is plenty of entertainment in the many restaurants, in the world famous Fonda Pepe and in the village Es Pujolls. Formentera is an ideal cycling island because of its small size and flat landscape. This romantic paradise offers long sandy beaches, crystal clear seas, stunning sunsets and beautiful starry skies.

Highlights on Formentera:

San Francisco Javier

The capital of the island is a welcoming village where a hippy market takes place every morning. The typical 18th century church is the centre of this village with its many boutiques and terraces.

Cap de Berberia

A beautiful nature reserve that is easy to reach by bike. You'll think you're at the end of the world when you stand at the lighthouse that towers over the steep rocks.

Es Pujolls

The entertainment centre of the island with plenty of terraces and restaurants. Every evening there is a small hippy market on the boulevard and you can top up your summer wardrobe in the many boutiques.

Las Salinas

The salt lakes between the port of La Sabina and the village of Es Pujolls are situated in the middle of a nature reserve that borders several sandy beaches. The beaches of Illetas and Tanga come together on a promontory with the Mediterranean Sea on both sides.

San Fernando

Central village which feels warm and welcoming in the evening. After sunset, the whole island comes together at the famous restaurant Fonda Pepe.

La Mola

The only mountain in Formentera where you have a fantastic view across the whole island from the winding road. At the top, you'll find the village of El Pilar with its restored windmill, and a genuine hippy atmosphere. The lighthouse of La Mola stands on top of a steep rocky coastline and casts the most beautiful light over the Mediterranean Sea. Jules Verne was inspired by this to write one of his books.
